Chennai, April 11: Nobody saw this coming. Chennai Super Kings. Five IPL trophies. A fanbase that bleeds yellow. A franchise that has made the playoffs so many times it almost feels automatic. And yet here they are, three games into IPL 2026, without a single win to their name.
Last in the table. Zero points. Three straight defeats.
Tonight at Chepauk, they face Delhi Capitals, and honestly, calling this a must-win feels like an understatement at this point.
Delhi are no pushover either. They came here three days after losing a match by one run. One run. The kind of loss that makes grown men stare at the ceiling at two in the morning.
Two wounded teams. One ground. Everything to play for.
Delhi Won the Toss and Said, You Bat First
Axar Patel called correctly at the toss and did not think twice. CSK will bat. Simple as that.
There is a reason for this, and it is not complicated. Chennai nights get heavy dew as the match goes on. By the time the second innings comes around, the ball gets wet, spinners struggle to grip it, and batting becomes easier. The team chasing always gets a slight edge. Axar knows this ground. He knows how this city plays at night.
So Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad walked out to open. Samson hit a four off the very first over from Auqib Nabi. Small moment. But the crowd at Chepauk needed that. They roared like it was the winning run.
The night is young though.
What Actually Happened to CSK Last Time Out
Go back six days. Bengaluru. RCB versus CSK.
RCB batted first and put up 250 runs in their twenty overs. Two hundred and fifty. That number needs a moment to sink in. It is the highest score any team has ever posted against the Chennai Super Kings in the entire history of the IPL.
And the man who did most of the damage came in late in the innings when the game should have been winding down. Tim David walked to the crease and played like someone who had a personal grudge. Seventy runs off twenty-five balls. Eight sixes. He was picking up CSK’s bowlers and depositing them into the stands with something close to contempt.
CSK needed 251 to win. Three wickets fell in the first three overs for 30 runs. The chase was already finished before most fans had settled into their seats.
Sarfaraz Khan got a fifty and looked decent. Prashant Veer contributed. But CSK were bowled out for 207 and lost by 43 runs. Their third defeat in a row.
Now, here is the thing that worries the CSK camp more than the scoreline. Their bowlers have been giving away runs at the death like there is no tomorrow. Noor Ahmad, in particular, has been expensive and has not taken a single wicket all season. Their top order keeps falling over just when it should be laying a foundation.
And MS Dhoni is not there. Calf injury. No return date confirmed. The man who has bailed this team out of impossible situations more times than anyone can count is sitting in the dugout in street clothes.
Tonight there are two changes. Dewald Brevis is back after a side injury. The young South African is a proper big-hitter and CSK need exactly that energy in the middle of their innings. Gurjapneet Singh comes in for Noor Ahmad, who frankly needed a rest after three rough outings.
What Delhi Went Through Three Nights Ago
Different kind of hurt entirely.
Delhi were chasing 211 against the Gujarat Titans at their home ground in Delhi. KL Rahul was in the middle of one of the best innings you will see in this IPL season. Ninety-two runs off fifty-two balls. He was timing the ball perfectly, finding gaps, and hitting boundaries when the situation demanded it.
With two overs left, Delhi still needed about 36 runs. Tough but doable. Then Gujarat’s Rashid Khan got among the wickets, and things got tight. David Miller came back to bat despite a bruised finger on his hand. Just to put that in perspective, the man was batting with an injury because his team needed him.
He smashed twenty-three runs off the second-to-last over. Suddenly, Delhi needed just 13 off the final six balls. The crowd in Delhi were on their feet.
Then it happened. Penultimate ball of the match. Two runs needed off two balls. Miller was on strike. Prasidh Krishna steamed in. Miller did not take a single run off that ball. Maybe he wanted to hit the winning runs himself. Maybe he did not trust the batter at the other end. Maybe it was just one of those moments where the pressure gets to you.
He missed the last ball. Jos Buttler, fielding behind the stumps with one glove off, whipped the bails off in a flash. Kuldeep Yadav was run out at the other end. Gujarat Titans won the match by one run.
One. Single. Run.
Delhi’s dressing room was gutted. Rahul, who had done everything right, sat there with nothing to show for it. That is cricket for you sometimes, and it is brutal.
They have come to Chennai wanting to forget that night exists.
Why Tonight Feels Different From a Normal IPL Game
Most matches in the league phase feel important but survivable. You lose, you regroup, you come back.
This one has a different weight to it.
If CSK lose tonight, they become the first team in their own history to lose four games on the bounce at the start of an IPL season. Think about that. A franchise with five titles, legends in the dressing room, one of the most loyal fanbases in all of cricket, and they would be staring at four straight defeats. That is territory they have simply never been in before.
The supporters at Chepauk understand this. That is why the atmosphere tonight will be something else entirely. This crowd does not just watch, they push. They get behind the team with a kind of collective energy that visiting sides find genuinely uncomfortable. CSK have won seven of their nine home matches against Delhi at this very ground over the years.
Delhi know this too. It is part of why Axar chose to bowl first. Get the tough bit done while conditions are even. Chase under the dew in the second half when things are easier. Smart thinking from a captain who has impressed people this season.
The Players Who Will Decide This Game
Start with Sameer Rizvi because his story tonight has an extra layer to it.
The kid is twenty-two years old and has already scored 160 runs in three innings this season. Two of those innings won matches for Delhi. He is the kind of batter who looks completely unbothered by pressure, like the big moments actually make him play better rather than worse.
But here is the subplot. Rizvi used to play for the Chennai Super Kings. This was his ground. These were his crowds. Tonight, he walks in wearing Delhi blue, and the Chepauk faithful will have complicated feelings about him. How he handles that, and how he performs, will be one of the stories of the evening.
KL Rahul is a man with something to prove. He played beautifully last time out and still ended up on the losing side through no fault of his own. He is in the kind of form where he reads the ball early and has answers for every type of bowling. CSK’s spinners need to find a way to slow him down before he gets set.
Kuldeep Yadav is the bowler who could really hurt CSK tonight. Left-arm wrist spin on a Chepauk pitch that traditionally gives turn and grip. CSK’s middle order will need to read him carefully. One or two wrong shots against Kuldeep in the middle overs and an innings that was building nicely can fall apart very quickly.
On the CSK side, it all starts with their openers giving the team a real platform. If Samson and Gaikwad put on sixty or seventy runs in the powerplay, the batters coming in behind them, Sarfaraz, Shivam Dube, and the returning Brevis, will have room to express themselves. A total somewhere around 180 to 200 on this ground gives CSK’s bowlers something genuine to defend.
If the openers fall early again, it becomes a very long night for yellow.

The IPL has seen teams recover from terrible starts before. It is a long tournament and the math can work in your favor if results go your way later. CSK are not mathematically out of this. Not even close.
But there comes a point where the deficit becomes too steep. Where even good cricket in the final weeks is not enough to drag you into the playoffs. CSK are not there yet but they are standing right at the edge of that cliff.
Win tonight and they climb back from the ledge. The momentum shifts, the dressing room breathes again, the fans go home happy, and suddenly this season feels alive.
Lose, and the questions get a lot louder. About the team selection. About the rebuild. About whether this squad, without Dhoni finishing games, has enough firepower to compete at this level.
Chepauk will give them everything tonight. The rest is up to the players.
