One Side Is Flying, the Other Is Crashing DC vs GT Tonight Could Flip the Season

DC Vs GT

New Delhi, April 8: Two teams. Opposite starts to the season. Tonight at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals host Gujarat Titans in Match 14 of IPL 2026, and honestly, it is hard to think of a bigger gap in form between the two sides this early in the tournament.

DC have won both their matches. GT have lost both. Simple as that.

Toss happens at 7 PM, first ball at 7:30 PM IST.

The Rizvi Show Has Been Unreal

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. Sameer Rizvi is doing things that make no sense on paper.

dc vs gt

Two matches. Two rescues. Two match-winning knocks.

Against Lucknow, DC were wobbling at 26 for 4 chasing 142. Rizvi walked in and smashed 70 off 47 balls. Game over. Against the Mumbai Indians four days ago, DC were in even deeper trouble, 7 for 2 inside two overs, chasing 163. Rizvi came in, looked around, and hit 90 off 51 balls. Seven fours. Seven sixes. Delhi won with 11 balls to spare.

He is currently only the seventh IPL cricketer ever to win three consecutive Player of the Match awards. If he does it tonight, he becomes the first ever to win four in a row.

That is the kind of form that makes captains nervous on the other side.

He always could take spinners apart, but what has changed this season is that he can now shift gears even against the fast bowlers. That makes him genuinely dangerous against any attack.

But Delhi’s Top Order Is a Mess

Here is the thing, though, DC have a real problem at the top, and they know it.

dc vs gt

KL Rahul has scored exactly one run in two matches. Not one good innings. One run, total. For someone of his quality, that is borderline alarming.

Nitish Rana at No. 3 has been worse. A slow 15 against LSG. A three-ball run-out duck against MI. Karun Nair has been warming the bench, and Rana knows he could be dropped if he doesn’t score and score quickly tonight.

dc vs gt

DC keep winning because Rizvi rescues them. At some point, that rescue act has to stop working. Tonight could be that night, especially against a GT bowling attack that has Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan in the same XI.

Gujarat’s Heartbreak vs Rajasthan

Before tonight’s match, you need to know what happened to GT four days ago in Ahmedabad. Because it explains everything about where this team’s head is at.

dc vs gt

They were chasing 211 against the Rajasthan Royals. Sai Sudharsan gave them a platform with a beautiful 73 off 44 balls. At one stage, GT needed something like 40 off 30. Very gettable. Then their middle order fell apart completely.

dc vs gt

Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi came in as an Impact sub and dismissed Sudharsan, Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, and Rahul Tewatia in quick succession, finishing with 4 for 41 to turn the match entirely on its head.

dc vs gt

GT needed 15 off the last 12 balls, Rashid Khan and Rabada were still at the crease, and somehow, Tushar Deshpande in the final over nailed the yorkers and closed it out for RR. GT lost by six runs. A six-run loss from a position where they should have won by ten wickets.

Since IPL 2025, GT’s middle-order batters at positions 4 to 7 have averaged just 20.1, the lowest in the entire competition, and by a big margin. That number tells you everything. The top three can bat. Everything after that is a problem.

Gill Is Back. That Matters.

The big news for Gujarat tonight is that Shubman Gill is expected to return after missing the RR match due to a muscle spasm.

dc vs gt

Why does this matter? Because Gill is the captain. Because without him, GT batted with a makeshift opening pair. And because against DC specifically, Gill has a track record. He was part of GT’s successful chases of 204 and 200 against Delhi in 2025. He knows how to bat at this ground, against these bowlers, in these situations.

With Gill back, the GT top three of Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler looks genuinely dangerous. The question, as always, is what happens when one of them gets out.

Who Wins the Toss, Who Bowls First, DC Or GT?

At this ground, it is almost a given. Teams batting second have won 94 of 176 T20 matches at Arun Jaitley Stadium, which is 54 per cent of all games. Dew comes in around the second half of the second innings and makes life very hard for spinners defending a total.

Both captains know this. Whoever wins the toss will bowl. Bank on it.

The Matchups That Will Decide the Game

Three battles to watch out for tonight:

dc vs gt

KL Rahul vs Mohammed Siraj. Rahul has been out of form this season, but against Siraj specifically, he has been on fire across his career. He has scored 135 runs off 79 balls against Siraj in IPL at a strike rate of over 170. If Rahul finally gets going tonight and he gets Siraj early, it could be a big night for DC’s opener.

dc vs gt

Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel vs GT’s Middle Order. This is where Delhi can hurt Gujarat the most. Kuldeep’s wrong’un and Axar’s left-arm spin on a home surface are tough to read. GT’s middle order has been collapsing against spin consistently. If DC bowls first, overs 8 to 15 are where they will go hunting.

Rashid Khan vs whoever is chasing. Even in defeat, Rashid has been GT’s most reliable bowler. He is getting his pace and turn back, bowling at 88 to 96 kph, and it has been difficult to score off in the middle overs. If GT sets a total, Rashid can put the brakes on any chase.

What About Kagiso Rabada?

Rabada looks a long way from his 2020 IPL days when he took the Purple Cap and went at 8.34 economy. He has picked up three wickets in two games for GT, but has been going at 10.85 per over, expensive for a strike bowler being paid the big bucks.

dc vs gt

The yorker has gone missing from his arsenal. His cross-seam deliveries in the death have not been working. But on a flat Delhi track tonight, if he gets his lines right early, he can still be dangerous. He just needs one over to click.

The Pitch Won’t Help Bowlers

The pitch tonight is expected to serve up a high-scoring match. Rain has been around in the lead-up to match day, with thunderstorms forecast earlier in the afternoon. While the weather should clear before the game, the pitch, which has been under covers, might hold a bit of moisture and help seamers initially.

The death-overs run rate at this ground in recent IPL seasons has gone as high as 12.67 per over. Batters at the end will find it a paradise. Bowlers will need to be precise or they will be carted.

Head to Head: Delhi Closing the Gap

All-time, the Gujarat Titans lead the head-to-head record 4-3 across seven matches. But in the last five meetings, Delhi have won three compared to Gujarat’s two.

The momentum has shifted. And given where both teams are right now, tonight is Delhi’s to lose.

What Happens If DC wins

A third straight win puts DC firmly near the top of the points table. It gives Axar Patel’s captaincy real credibility. It confirms Sameer Rizvi as the story of this IPL season. And it gives them breathing room to try different combinations in the matches ahead.

What Happens If GT wins

Shubman Gill returns and immediately changes GT’s fortunes. Their season, which looked like it might spiral early, suddenly has life. The pressure on their middle order eases a little. And a DC top order that has been leaking wickets every match finally gets exposed.

People’s Call

Delhi are the favourites tonight, and they deserve to be. Google’s match predictor gives DC a 54 per cent chance against GT’s 46 per cent. That gap is not huge, but it reflects the form difference accurately.

dc vs gt

GT can win this. They have the firepower in their top three. They have Rashid. They have experience in big games. But they need their middle order to show up at least once, and so far this season, it has not happened.

For Delhi, the task is simple: stop depending on one man to bail them out. If KL Rahul, Nissanka or Rana contributes tonight, DC win this comfortably. If they collapse to 15 for 3 again, even Rizvi might not be enough.

Cricket starts at 7:30 tonight. Under the Delhi lights. Both teams desperately need something from this game one to keep flying, one to stop falling.
