Rajinikanth Confirms Jailer 2 Is Wrapped And Drops a Bombshell About Kamal Haasan Film Starting in August

Rajinikanth

Chennai, April 5: Saturday was just another busy day at the Chennai airport. People rushing, cameras clicking, the usual noise. And then Rajinikanth walked out.

Someone stuck a mic in his face. Nothing new there. But this time, instead of the usual nod-and-walk, he actually stopped. He talked. And in less than a minute, the man casually dropped two pieces of news that had Tamil cinema Twitter losing its mind before he even reached his car.

Jailer 2 is wrapped. And the Kamal Haasan film, the one fans have been dreaming about for years, is starting in August.

Just like that.

Jailer 2

No big press event. No studio announcement with a fancy graphic. No coordinated leak through a film journalist. Just Rajinikanth, an airport corridor, and thirty seconds of straight talk.

Very on-brand, honestly.

So What Exactly Did He Say

He kept it short, the way he always does.

Jailer 2 shooting is done. Post-production is on. The production house will announce the release date soon. That was the Jailer 2 part.

Jailer 2

Then came the second bit. The KH x RK film, his collaboration with Kamal Haasan, goes on floors in August 2026. Nelson Dilipkumar is directing it. Anirudh is doing the music. Red Giant Movies is backing it.

That is a lot of information packed into one airport interaction.

Why Jailer 2 Is Such A Big Deal

To understand why people are going crazy over this, you need to go back to August 2023.

Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar came into that film under real pressure. Nelson’s previous film, Beast, had not worked. Rajinikanth himself had been going through a rough patch commercially. People were uncertain. Some were even skeptical.

Then, the Jailer released and just demolished every doubt.

On day one alone, the film pulled in Rs 96.50 crore gross worldwide, with Rs 56.50 crore coming just from India. Not in a week. One day. By the end of its opening week, it had crossed Rs 434 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest Tamil first weeks ever at that point. And when it was all said and done, Jailer had crossed Rs 600 crore worldwide, standing as one of the biggest Indian blockbusters of the entire year.

The film itself was a full-on entertainer. Rajinikanth played Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired Tihar jailer who comes back hard when his family is threatened by an idol-smuggling gang. The kind of role that fits him like a glove. Mohanlal was in it. Jackie Shroff was in it. Shiva Rajkumar was in it. Anirudh’s background score became something people hummed for months after.

Word of mouth was incredible. Families went together. Fans went multiple times. The film had that rare quality where even people who were not hardcore Rajinikanth fans walked out happy.

So yes. A sequel to that film is a very big deal.

Rajinikanth has confirmed it is in its finishing stage. That means the heavy lifting is done. What is left is the editing room work, the final sound mix, and the VFX cleanup. The release date announcement from Sun Pictures should not be far off now. Trade circles are already talking about a 2026 release, though nothing is confirmed yet.

The Film Everyone Has Been Waiting For

Now here is where things get genuinely historic.

KH x RK. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in the same film. Together. On screen. In 2026.

Jailer 2

These two men have actually worked together in 21 films over their careers. But that was a long time ago. Their last major screen pairing was back in 1985 in Geraftaar, a Hindi film that also starred Amitabh Bachchan. That is over four decades of fans saying, “Imagine if they did a film together today.”

Well. It is happening.

A promo video had already dropped back in February, and it showed a sharp back-and-forth between the two legends with Nelson’s unmistakable style all over it. It ended with one of those classic Rajinikanth moments that reminded you exactly why the man is who he is. People watched it on repeat for days. Fan pages were flooding timelines with reaction videos.

But a promo is just a promo. An August shoot start date is the real thing.

According to Pinkvilla, the film is being targeted for a Diwali or Aayudha Pooja 2027 release. No official confirmation yet, but that timeline makes sense if they start rolling cameras in August.

Think about what this film actually represents. Two men who defined Tamil cinema across four decades. Back together. With a director who just delivered one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters in recent history. And Anirudh on music, who at this point seems to have the golden touch on everything he touches.

This is not just a film announcement. For a generation of Tamil cinema fans, this is the announcement.

Wait, There Is A Third Film Too

If you are thinking that two major films is already a packed schedule for anyone, you are right. But Rajinikanth is not done.

There is also Thalaivar 173. And this one has its own interesting story.

The film is being produced by Kamal Haasan’s production company Raaj Kamal Films International and is directed by Cibi Chakravarti, the young filmmaker who made the hit Don with Sivakarthikeyan in 2022. Anirudh is composing here as well. The tagline is simple and warm “Every Family Has A Hero.”

Jailer 2

The film had a rough start because the original director, Sundar C, had to step away due to circumstances beyond his control. The makers then held talks with several filmmakers before landing on Cibi Chakravarti. The official announcement came in early January this year, and fans warmed to the choice quickly, given how well Don had worked.

Shooting is set to begin in April 2026, with a Pongal 2027 release being the goal. And here is the part that is making fans really excited, there are strong whispers that Kamal Haasan might show up in a cameo in this film, too, though nobody from either camp has confirmed anything officially.

So let that sink in. Kamal Haasan is producing a Rajinikanth film where he may also appear. And then separately starring alongside Rajinikanth in KH x RK. Two completely different films. Two different creative setups. Same two legends.

Tamil cinema really is having a moment right now.

One Man Running Everything

Look at the names across these three projects, and something jumps out immediately.

Jailer 2

Nelson Dilipkumar is directing Jailer 2 and KH x RK. Anirudh Ravichander is composing for all three. That is not a coincidence. That is producers making very deliberate choices after watching what this particular combination of talent delivered with the original Jailer.

When you make Rs 600 crore, people do not fix what is not broken.

For Nelson, especially, the last three years have been quite the ride. He went from the difficult aftermath of Beast to directing the biggest Tamil hit of 2023 to now being the man behind two of the most anticipated Tamil films of the next two years simultaneously. That kind of turnaround does not happen often in any industry.

The Bigger Picture

Tamil cinema in 2026 is trying to find its rhythm. Big releases have had mixed results recently. The OTT versus theatre debate refuses to go away. Audiences are more selective than they used to be. Getting people off their sofas and into cinemas takes more than just a famous face on a poster now.

But certain combinations still carry that pull. Certain films still make people want to buy tickets weeks in advance. The Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan universe, because that is genuinely what it has become at this point, is one of those rare situations where the excitement builds itself.

Jailer 2

Jailer 2 wrapping means a release is coming, and soon. KH x RK starting in August means 2027 is already shaping up to be extraordinary for Tamil cinema. Thalaivar 173, going on floors this very month, adds another layer to an already packed picture.

A 75-year-old superstar, walking through an airport on a Saturday afternoon, just mapped out the next eighteen months of Tamil cinema in thirty seconds.

The release dates will come. The trailers will drop. The hype will build to something almost unreasonable. But right now, after that airport exchange, one thing is already clear.

The wait was worth it.
