DC vs PBKS, IPL 2026 Match 35: Can Delhi Finally Stop Punjab’s Unbeaten Run?

DC Vs PBKS

New Delhi, April 25: Punjab Kings walk into the Arun Jaitley Stadium today as the only unbeaten side in IPL 2026, and that fact alone tells you everything about the weight of this fixture. Match 35 is not just a regular Saturday afternoon contest in the capital. It is a crossroads game, one that could either push DC deeper into a hole or mark the moment they finally showed up.

Kick-off is at 3:30 PM IST, toss at 3:00 PM.

Form, Table, and the Gap Between Two Worlds

Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, remain the only unbeaten team in the competition so far, sitting at the top of the standings with 11 points from six outings. That is not a fluke. They are riding a five-match unbeaten streak, just two short of their best run across 2013 and 2014, and have looked in control across all phases of the game.

Delhi, on the other hand, are a team trying to remember what good cricket feels like. They head into this clash after suffering a 47-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, where their bowling unit struggled to make an impact, particularly against Abhishek Sharma, who dominated proceedings. With three wins from six matches, they currently sit sixth in the table. That is not a catastrophic position, but time is beginning to compress. Every dropped point between now and the business end of the tournament will cost them.

Still, there is something to hold on to at home. Having won both their home games so far, Delhi will look to maintain that solid record at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Delhi’s Batting Problem: Starts Without Substance

The most persistent headline around the Capitals this season has been the same one, week after week. The top order gets in, then gets out. While players like KL Rahul, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs have shown flashes of form, the top order has struggled to convert starts into big scores.

Pathum Nissanka has gone quiet after a bright start, while Nitish Rana, after being left out earlier, suddenly finds himself back under pressure. That kind of uncertainty in selection is never a good sign mid-tournament.

Then there is the chase problem, which is arguably the bigger structural issue. Delhi are yet to chase down 200 this season in three attempts, and since 2024 have fallen short in eight of their 10 pursuits of 200 or more. Against a Punjab side that has already cleared that barrier three times this season, that is a worrying pattern to carry into today.

Compounding the batting troubles is a lack of clarity in how they have used the Impact Player slot. The team has shuffled between Ashutosh Sharma against CSK, Karun Nair against RCB, and then back to Ashutosh against SRH. Inconsistency in strategy is as damaging as inconsistency in form.

Axar Under the Microscope

Captain Axar Patel has not escaped scrutiny either. In the previous game, Axar persisted with part-time off-spinner Nitish Rana against a rampaging Abhishek Sharma, while frontline options such as himself and Kuldeep Yadav were not utilised enough. Those are tactical calls that cost matches in knockout-stage cricket, and the IPL table has a long memory.

That said, Axar remains one of the most dangerous spinners in world T20 cricket when conditions align. The no dew factor in this afternoon clash makes this a spin-friendly environment, and Kuldeep Yadav and Axar himself become significantly more valuable in these conditions. If he gets his combinations right today, the spin battery could tip the game Delhi’s way. The problem is, he needs to actually use it.

Punjab’s Firepower: Arya, Iyer, and an Attack That Has Answers

Punjab’s batting looks almost unfair on paper right now. Priyansh Arya leads all IPL 2026 regulars with a staggering strike rate of 248.23, while Shreyas Iyer has accumulated 208 runs at a strike rate of 182.45. That is not a two-man band it is a high-calibre top order that has been doing exactly what Punjab’s previous sides so frequently failed to do: converting starts into wins.

Their batting has been decisive rather than reactive, crossing the 200-run mark three times already, and their middle order has consistently closed games instead of letting them drift. That finishing instinct has been the defining trait of this Punjab side under Iyer’s leadership. Last year’s Punjab teams were notorious for building platforms only to crumble. This one does not crumble.

Their powerplay batting, driven by Priyansh Arya, has been particularly destructive, and they carry an air of invincibility in chases, thanks in large part to Shreyas Iyer. PBKS are also joint-toppers in powerplay run rates, averaging 11.33 runs per over in the first six. Getting them in early, then, is no straightforward task.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh anchors an attack that gives away little in the powerplay. Vijaykumar Vyshak has broadened his repertoire this season, mixing hard lengths with cutters and yorkers at the death. Every wicket he has taken so far has come off his stock delivery, and he has been particularly effective at the death striking once every eight balls.

Then there is Yuzvendra Chahal, who could be the most important bowler on the park today. His ability to slow the game down and force mistakes could be crucial against a Delhi lineup heavy on right-handers.

The Spin Battle Will Decide This Game

On a dry Delhi surface in peak April heat, the battle between the spin attacks will shape this contest more than any individual innings.

Kuldeep Yadav remains Delhi’s most potent disruptor, capable of shifting momentum in a matter of deliveries. How each side negotiates the spin-heavy middle overs may well determine whether the finishers are playing with freedom or under pressure.

The pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is known to assist spinners, especially during the first innings. That means the side batting first may find the going trickier in the middle phase, while the pitch eases for batters as the match progresses. Batting second will be a good option given the weather and pitch conditions, with par score around 190-200.

For DC, winning the toss and bowling could prove critical. Letting Punjab set a target on a spinner-friendly surface in the first innings, and then chasing on a truer deck, is about the most logical game plan Delhi can walk out with. The problem, of course, is that they have a terrible record chasing big totals.

Pitch and Weather: Conditions That Reward Intent

Peak summer heat is expected at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, with temperatures hovering between 39 and 42 degrees Celsius. There is no rain forecast, and the zero dew factor in this afternoon’s clash makes it a pure batting and spin contest.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium features a flat black-soil surface with larger boundaries than most IPL venues, 65 metres square and 68 metres straight. Bigger boundaries tend to suppress sixes but reward clean hitting into the gaps. That suits a batting lineup like Punjab’s, which relies on placement and timing as much as raw power.

The last game at the Kotla was a thriller, with GT defending one run off the last ball. David Miller’s decision to turn down a single was the talking point from a game where 419 runs were scored in total. The curators have had a fortnight since that game, with enough time to prepare a similar track. Another high-scorer looks entirely plausible.

Head-to-Head: Perfectly Balanced, Entirely Irrelevant

Historically, there is nothing to separate the two sides. Seventeen wins apiece in 35 meetings underline how evenly matched this fixture has been over time. But as any cricket watcher knows, head-to-head records between evenly matched sides are essentially meaningless when one team is flying and the other is floundering. The numbers say 50-50. The form says something very different.

What Delhi Needs to Do

For Delhi to win today, several things need to happen simultaneously. KL Rahul needs to bat deep, not just get a start. The Impact Player decision needs to reflect a clear plan rather than trial and error. Axar must trust Kuldeep and himself to bowl their full quota in the middle overs rather than preserving them. And the fielding, which has been a recurring source of self-inflicted damage, must be tighter.

Delhi possesses one of the better bowling attacks in the tournament, but is still awaiting the return of Australian star Mitchell Starc. His absence continues to leave a gap at the top of their pace attack that has not been fully plugged.

T Natarajan and Lungi Ngidi remain two of the most economical death bowlers in the competition, conceding at 8.25 and 8.3 runs per over, respectively, only behind Jofra Archer and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the economy charts. If Delhi bat first and post a competitive total, those two could make life very difficult for Punjab’s lower order in the final four overs.

Predicted Playing XIs

As per available squad information and recent selections:

DC (Predicted XI): KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana, Axar Patel (c), Sameer Rizvi, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, T Natarajan, Mukesh Kumar

PBKS (Predicted XI): Shreyas Iyer (c), Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Vijaykumar Vyshak

Verdict: Punjab Favoured, But the Kotla is No Gift

Punjab Kings are the clear favourites in this fixture. Their form is exceptional, their squad is settled, and their captain has been among the most influential figures in IPL 2026. For Delhi, this is a test of character as much as cricket. A win would reignite their campaign and remind the rest of the table that Axar’s side is not done. A loss would make the road to the playoffs measurably steeper.

For now, the ball is in Delhi’s court, and they know it.

The match starts at 3:30 PM IST. Live on Star Sports Network and JioHotstar.
