Chennai, April 26: Shubman Gill did not hesitate for even a second at the toss. The coin landed in Gujarat Titans’ favour, Gill called it right, and the decision was immediate GT bowl first. Chennai Super Kings will bat.
It is a bold call in some ways, and a logical one in others. The afternoon sun has been beating down on the MA Chidambaram Stadium since well before the toss, and the Chepauk surface on pitch number six is expected to slow down considerably as the game progresses. Gill’s thinking is clear let Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj do damage with the new ball in the powerplay, bring Rashid Khan on when the pitch gets its grip later, and then ask GT’s batters to chase a target on a surface that has had time to settle.

It is a strategy that trusts Gill’s own batting ability under pressure. It is also a strategy that puts enormous responsibility on GT’s bowling unit to perform early.
What the Toss Means for CSK

For Ruturaj Gaikwad and his side, the toss outcome is not the worst news. CSK bat first on this ground and in these conditions quite comfortably. The Chepauk crowd, already filling the stands, will be behind them from ball one. Sanju Samson, who has been in the form of his life with two centuries in his last four innings, will open alongside Gaikwad and look to take on Rabada and Siraj from the outset.

The key for CSK in the powerplay will be surviving the new ball. Rabada is among the most dangerous new-ball operators in T20 cricket globally. Siraj, on his day, can swing it both ways. If those two get early wickets, GT’s decision to field first looks inspired. If Samson and Gaikwad see off the first six overs with minimal damage, CSK could post a total that becomes very difficult to chase on a deteriorating afternoon Chepauk surface.
Gill’s Gamble and the Logic Behind It
Gill knows GT’s chase record. They are a side that has historically been comfortable setting off in pursuit of targets the top three of Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler collectively carry enough firepower to hunt down any total on a good day. After two consecutive defeats, the captain clearly wants to be in a position where his best batters are playing with clarity rather than building from scratch under pressure in the first innings.

That said, the pitch is the real variable here. Afternoon games at Chepauk have tended to reward first-innings teams on this particular surface this season. By the time GT are chasing in the second half of the afternoon, the ball will grip, turn, and stop and Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein will have an increasingly helpful surface to bowl on.
Gill has backed his bowlers and his top order to make that irrelevant. Whether that confidence is justified is what the next four hours will tell us.
Playing XIs

Chennai Super Kings: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary.

Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill (c), Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler (wk), Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan, Jason Holder, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Manav Suthar, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj.

MS Dhoni remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from the calf injury that has kept him out since the start of the tournament. CSK field an unchanged side. GT have gone with the combination that carried them through the earlier part of the season.
The Match-Up to Watch From Ball One
With GT choosing to bowl, the first six overs take on extra significance. Rabada and Siraj against Samson and Gaikwad at a sun-soaked Chepauk is the kind of powerplay contest that sets the tone for everything that follows. If CSK’s openers fire, this becomes a 180-plus target and GT’s chase plan starts looking complicated. If Rabada gets one to move early and takes a wicket in the first couple of overs, the complexion shifts entirely.
For now, the match is underway. Gill has made his call. The crowd has found its voice. And Samson is at the crease.
